Mise-en-scene
Blank screen first 5 seconds
At the beginning of this clip, it starts off with a low angle towards the ship sailing in the sea.

This clip starts off with the ship  on the ocean, this is give the viewer a perspective of the entire size of the ship. It then cuts to show whats actually happening on deck of this ship. The pace is quite fast showing that there is a sense of urgency. The movement and speech of the actors is also fast. There is then a cut to the black pearl coming up from behind, they shoot this on the side of the ship so that you get Keira knightly’s perspective of looking out at the boat. There is a wide gap from their ship to the black pearl, showing that there is a tiny bit of time to prepare. This then cuts back to the intensity on deck . Later on it cuts to below deck, which shows a different story of whats happening up on deck. This is showing jack sparrow being locked up.  There is then a cut of jack sparrows point of view as he looks out of the hole in his cell.
Diegetic sound of of the sea crashing against the side of the boat. And there is incidental music in the background.
The location is in the middle of no where out at sea. The colour design was mostly blue, the sky was a clear blue and the sea was a dark blue. The lighting is quite bright. When the black pearl appears from behind at - 0.17, there is smoke and a misty cloud around the ship, making the boat look gloomy and not nice.
0.5-1 minute
The first part of the first minute, Keira Knightley is getting out of something, and the she is in a Medium close up. There is then a low angle of a guy shouting to loosen the gallons. There is then another low angle of the woman steering the boat. It then shows the boat behind coming in.. in a long shot. There is then a high angle shot of Keira looking down on her as she starts climbing up to the same level as the camera.  There is then a medium close up of the girl steering the boat. There is a side on shot of a guy pushing jack sparrow into a cell. There is then a point of view shot of jack sparrow looking through a hole in the side of the boat out to sea. There is then a small following shot towards then end of this minute. Its a two-shot when jack sparrow gets pushed into the cell.
The scene is getting quicker and quicker in this minute, and everything is getting more tense. It cuts to the men working and getting the cannons ready, which shows the viewers that a fight is going to happen.  There is then a cut to watching both the boats sail past, which shows how close the black pearl is to the ship. This then cuts to back on deck and shows how urgent they need to load the cannons.
There is incidental music still going on in this first minute, and there is also diegetic sound of the steering wheel turning around and the sea in the background. There is also diegetic sound of the cell door opening and keys rattling. There is diegetic sound going on when jack sparrow is wading through the water in the cell.
The first part of the location in this first minute is on the boat and its showing all the pirates rushing around on board. the colours in this part of the scene is all quite dark and brown sorts of colours. The woman steering the boat is wearing a pirates hat indicating that she is quite high up ( captain or good job) on the boat. The lighting is quite bright on the boat but it quickly changes to being dark when they show jack sparrow being pushed into the cell. All the colours in this part of the scene are even darker, creating the atmosphere, even the man pushing jack sparrow into the cell is dark skinned. All the costumes are quite dirty and rough looking.
1-2 minutes
At the beginning of the second minute of this scene, it shows a close up of a man shouting at other pirates. There is a side on shot of the cannons on the side of the boat. A low angle shot happens when the flag is being hoisted up. When the men are passing the cannon balls to each other it is a medium close up of their hands passing them on. There is then a medium long shot of a guy looking out to sea whilst standing on the side of the boat. Then there is a low angle shot looking up at the same guy saying ‘we’re gonna need that’. As the boats go past in the next part, the camera is on a high angle shot. Soon after that there is a over shoulder shot at - 1.59.
This scene shows the speed in which people are loading things into the cannons, and quickly preparing for fight. It cuts down to the guys loading the cannons, so it shows that the people below deck are also in a rush. It then cuts up to the captain looking down on the ship, it comes across the viewer like he’s taking his last look before the ship gets ruined. You then see jack sparrows view when he’s looking out of the hole in the side of the boat. The speech on deck is getting louder and everything is getting more tense.
There is still incidental music going on, and there is also diegetic sound happening when the cannon holes open up on the side of the boat. You can also here the sound of the wind when the flag is blowing which shows that its windy. They use diegetic sound when they throw a barrel into the water and when the girl starts breathing heavily at - 1.45.
The location in this minute is mostly up top on the boat. The lighting is bright and the sky is quite blue and clear. All the costumes are the same ( dirty and rough looking) and the makeup in it is just dirt on the faces and making the people look dirty.  The flag that is shown in this minute is black with a skull on it, indicating death. The properties in this scene is - boats, cannons parts on the boat and smoke.
2-3 minutes
Near the beginning of the third minute there is a close up of Keira looking at everyone. There is then a moment of a two-shot of two guys loading cannon balls into the cannon, this is also a medium shot. There is then a high angle shot showing down on the people working on the boat, which then switches to a close up of a guy with a monkey. There is then a close up of jack sparrow face up against the hole in the side of the boat, and then you see his eye looking through the hole from the other side. There is then a low angle shot of the guy running towards something at 2:45 and then another low angle of two guys looking down at people.

Again in this scene they have incidental music .... and diegetic sound. When they are taking all the metal out of the cannons you can hear it falling onto the floor. Its is also diegetic when you can hear the monkey making a screeching noise. You can hear the sea crashing around still but very faintly in the back ground and you can also hear weapons being rattled around at - 2:31. There is a loud splashing noise ( diegetic) as the anchor falls into the water.

The location is on the boat again... up on deck and down below. Up on deck it is still bright and down below is is again, dark and gloomy. The costumes are the same and so is the make up. All of the girls on the boat aren't made to look pretty, they look rough with no make up on and have dirty faces. Jack sparrow has eyeliner on and his costume is a bit more brighter than the others, which sort of reflects on his personality. On the boat behind there is smoke around it... showing that its not a nice boat.
3-4 minutes
At the start of this minute, there is a extreme close up of the mans face when he is holding the monkey and then is shortly followed by a close up of the monkey. There is a low angled show at the boat is going up against a wave and another as the woman steering lets go of the steering wheel. There is a pan going around the boat shortly after and then a zoom of the guy shouting to everyone. After, there is a low angle of two guys pushing the steering wheel around and then a high angle of jack sparrow being thrown around the cell. Theres is a side on view of the boat going past whilst the other one is coming in front and then it quickly switches to jack sparrows extreme close up of his eye looking through the hole in the side of the boat. There is a point of view shot of the pirates looking across to the other pirates on the other boat opposite them at - 3:40. There are two close ups one after each other of two people both shouting. Soon after there is a high angle shot looking down on jack sparrow on the floor after a cannon had been shot into his cell.

At the beginning of this minute, you can hear the anchor being hit against a rock, and this is diegetic sound.  There is interval music going on in the background. You can also hear the waves crashing and the steering wheel spinning around which is also diegetic sound. There is a sound bridge of the men shouting from the other boat, and then swooping of the sword has a sound effect on it. There are sound effects as the cannons go off, but this is also diegetic sound. You can hear the wood being blasted everywhere which is a sound effect.

The location is up deck or down bellow in the cell in which jack sparrow is in being thrown around. The sky is really blue, and the costumes are still the same. Everyone is still dirty looking. There is smoke being set off when the cannons go off showing that the cannons have just blasted, and down in the cell, is really dark. The atmosphere outside is still quite bright, although when the two boats come in contact and they start fighting, the air becomes misty.
4-4.20 minutes

This minute starts off with a high angle shot, looking down on the two boats firing cannons at each other. There is then a extreme close up of a spoon on fire quickly hitting the wall close to a mans face. It is also a reaction shot because you see the guys reaction as he looks at the spoon in the wall next to him. There is then a medium close up of another guy with a fork in his eye. Towards the end of this clip it shows a guy in a medium close up take the fork out, but puling the eye ball out too. Right at the end there is a two-shot of the same two guys peering out of the cannon hole.

There is sound effects off wood breaking off the boat and flying around. There is diegetic sound of the cannons going off, and the sound of metal hitting wood when the spoon fly’s into the wall in the boat. There is a sound effect of the guys eye moving with the fork in it, and when the guy pulls it from his eye. At this point in the clip there is no interval music.
The location again is either up on deck of down bellow shooting cannons. The air is really misty and full of smoke from the cannons. On the inside of the boat ( where they are shooting cannons) it is dark and a bit gloomy. The mens faces are really filthy and their eyes are a bit yellow indicating that they are always dirty and not clean and that they drink a lot of alcohol.

Livvy and Sam chase scene

My chase sequence evaluation

The brief :  For this sequence we had to create a simple chase sequence with a twist that involves some basic cinematic trickery. The sequence had to be around 2-3 minutes long and must include
  • A person being chased through doors
  • Entrances which are not doors and one ‘ eccentric’ portal
  • Must cut back and forth between chaser and chased.
We had to plan the story board before we filmed it.

Planning : In our group we had to plan the storyline to our chase film.  The group came together and spoke about different ideas of portals that we could use in our film, e.g - Going under a table in the dining room and coming out of a cardboard box in the hall way.  We also looked at different youtube clips to get ideas of portals ( Rizzle kicks hit ‘ get down with the trumpets’ used a good technique of falling onto something but ending up on something else). Many ideas we had we couldn't use due to using equipment that we couldn’t use.

Filming : The filming went well although we had a lack of time. We managed to get the clips and portals that we wanted into it and we enjoyed using many different filming techniques towards it. We had to change the location for many of our planned scenes since the weather wasn’t as we had hoped for it to be. There was constant rain which meant that some of our outside scenes had to be taken indoors somewhere. We had to retake many of our clips to get an accurate and better quality film. We all took part in filming at least one piece of the overall sequence and helping with different filming ideas.

Editing : Me and Sam Sherwood paired up to complete the editing for our chase sequence. Sam did most of the ‘hands on’ editing whilst I gave ideas on where to cut and edit. We added music to the scene to bring more interest into the film from the viewers.

Conclusion : If we were to do this task again, then I would change a few things, such as having smoother cuts into the portals and storyline. I feel like our groups story line was quite weak  and could of had a better ending to it. All together i think our chase sequence went well but we should of spent more time filming another scene for our ending so that the film made more sense.

Harry Potter Mise en Scene

Setting

The setting has taken place in a ancient looking hall. There are floating candles in the air showing that this place is magical. The torches on the outside of the hall show that it is ancient and a old building. The ceiling isn’t normal since it looks like the sky, also showing that this is a magical place. There are long wooden tables indicating that the place isn't normal and that it is also quite ancient. The setting immediately shows that this place has magical people in it or people that are not usual.
The chair that Dumbledore uses to sit on is bigger and has a different shape to the other students or teachers chairs. The colour of his chair is also gold, with different patterns into it. This shows that he is higher up than everyone else in importance.
The lights at the side are light by flames showing that this is around the time when people used candles. The cups that the students use don't look normal and same with the plates, showing that this is a different kind of school and that it is old.
The colour of the hall is very plain and basic wood, which makes the ceiling look more extravagant.  The teachers are right at the front on a higher level than the students showing that they are the teachers, and they also have long candles on their tables which the students don't have, indicating their privileges.

Costume

The costumes in this clip show each individuals character apart from the students. The students look smart with their gowns and ties. Most schools don't wear gowns as school uniform, so this shows that they are not at a normal school.
Hagrid’s costume represents his character since he is the schools key and grounds keeper which means that he will be outside a lot, and so the colours of his outfit blends into the nature with earthy colours.
Dumbledore represents a classic wizard ( long beard, hat, long cloak), his outfit is very heavy looking, indicative the weight that he carries in the school as the head master. His cloak is a thick c silky velvet with fur around the color.
The cloaks and Dumbledore’s tassel on his hat adds to the impression that this is a school from which students would graduate. In this case graduating in the mastery of wizardry.
Professor Mc Gonagall is wearing a long velvet green cloak which swishes when she moves, making her character seem important, the richness of the fabric also indicates her status in the school. She wears a traditional pointed black witches hat which is slightly crooked at the top this gives her more of an endearing and matronly character.
The school care taker is wearing a brown coat which blends in with the colours of the wall paneling. This along side the cut and design of the outfit gives the care taker a rather ominous and scary appearance. The fact that he is almost camouflage and blends in with the walls, means that he can appear almost out of nowhere enhancing his ominous persona.
Professor Snape wears black robes matching his black hair, this represents the ‘darkness’ of slithering, the house he represents. His rope swishes behind him as he moves quickly, showing that his character is quite sly and slithery like an angry snakes tail as it swishes. His hair is also slimy looking and sleek.

Lighting

The lighting at the beginning of this scene is quite bright, which shows that it is cheerful, the flames burning brightly indicate a new beginning. The flames are not dying down, they are intense and burning well, showing a new start.
The lighting also helps the mood of excitement and anticipation with what is to come.
The lighting throughout the scene stays the same, which shows that the whole of this scene is bright and cheerful, a celebration of the beginning of a new school year and the selection of new pupils into their respective school houses.

Character movement and expression

Professor Mc Gonagalls character is quite high up in the school, since she leads the children in in a orderly fashion into the hall and the way she walks shows that she can be quite firm as a teacher but a caring mother to them as well. The way she stands when she is talking to the students is up right which makes her seem quite strict.
Dumbledore is sitting on a golden chair and when he stands up its quite slow, showing that he is old. He speaks like his voice is weak and it makes him come across as old and wise. The way he speaks and looks towards the children makes the viewers understand that he is also a nice person.
Hermiones character is very clever and this is shown by some of the first things she says in the beginning of this scene. When she walks up to have the hat chose her school house, she seems really confident as well as being worried.
Harry potter walks seems to be more shy when he goes up to have the hat put on him, his facial expressions show that he is scared even when the hat is on his head. He is looking up at the hat worried that anything could happen. Harry looks intelligent and by the way he speaks also shows this.

Draco Malfoy

Draco is Latin for dragon, ultimately the ancient Greek drakōn, meaning serpent. The first part, mal, should be easily recognised as meaning evil or bad. It shows up in English in such words as malevolent, malicious or malign, and comes from the Latin adjective "malus" meaning evil or bad.

Draco Malfoy

Blond hair is usually associated with people that are innocent and sweet
but in Malfoy's case it makes him look... evil and devious
His slicked back hair signifies to the audience that he is.. one of the bad people in this film.
He look because..

Hagrid is an enthusiastic and cheerful character who is always thoughtful towards others and relatively fatherly towards harry. He is constantly giving advice to harry and the students and he is always positive during the hardest of times. Many of the students go to him for help since he is a caring and helpful person and always making them feel welcome. His appearance can seem scruffy and dirty, but deep down he is a soft and gentle person.

Prof Dumbledore is a major character in series of films. He is a loving and wise man that helps Harry grow up. He is mysterious closed and secretive and you don’t find out about his life until the last few films after he dies. His style dress is quirky and interesting and suggests academic gowns.

Has a very big role in the Harry Potter films. His appearance is very magical and this is demonstrated by the style of his robes which includes stars and necklaces. He has a very mysterious and secretive character and you only really get a sense of what he is like in the last couple of films before he dies. He only confides in a few characters. The mysteriousness of this character has the effect of extending audience interest.

Is one of the main characters in the Harry Potter series. He is closed off secretive character but he enjoys teaching harry about the magical enters from book one and seems to think particularly fondly of him. Although he the loudest character in the films he is a very brave intelligent one who seems to put others before himself. He is a very magical character clothes and character wise. The robes that he wears especially suggest that he is a smart man and his wizard hat emphasises that he is a magical character. The beard also implies a certain level wisdom about his character and the colour contrast between his dark grey clothes and his lighter grey beard suggests that he is quite a neutral man- this could also reflect back on his fairly consistent personality.

Severus Snape is quite a major character with a dark and sinister appearance. He is shifty and deceptive, with an unsettling look.

Is a mysterious character that keeps the audience guessing whether he is good or bad. His first appearance makes him look particularly evil with his dark looks. These being his robes, hair and physical looks (pallid and sallow).

Is a dark and complicated character to understand. The way he acts suggests that he is shifty and evil person but nearer the end of the movies he turns out to be good. He seems bitter and cold towards the students he teaches as if not wanting to show his true colours
